Routes to get to the Netherlands
A broad overview of the most important routes to come to the Netherlands, such as family, work, study, asylum, EU free movement and routes where an MVV or basic foreign exam plays a role.
- Not everyone comes via the same residence route; family, work, study, asylum and EU free movement work differently.
- IND, Netherlands Worldwide, municipality and DUO do not all play the same role at the same time.
- For some routes, an MVV, residence permit or basic exam abroad are important before integration in the Netherlands begins.
First steps after arrival in the Netherlands
Practical guides for the first period in the Netherlands, such as registration with the municipality, BSN, DigiD, health insurance, GP, banking and daily starting questions.
- After arrival, the practical basics often begin first: address, registration, BSN and access to government affairs.
- DigiD, health insurance and contact with the municipality or GP are often needed sooner than people expect.
- The correct order prevents delays in work, studies, allowances, appointments and official messages.
Language levels and tests explained
An overview of the most important language levels and tests in the Netherlands, such as the basic foreign exam, integration exams, KNM and State Exam NT2.
- A1, A2, B1 and B2 are language levels; they are not automatically the same as a specific key name.
- Basic exam abroad, integration exams and State Exam NT2 belong to different goals and phases.
- The right test depends on your route: before departure, for integration or for study and work at a higher level.
Learning resources for integration and KNM
An overview of the best-known learning resources, practice sites and guided programs for people who want to study smart and targeted for integration.
- Always start with the official exam requirements and then build your own study mix.
- Popular learning resources work best when you combine practice questions, vocabulary and real explanations.
- For paid courses, always check whether the content suits your route, level and exam goal.
Official information about integration
Quickly find where you can read official information about rules, deadlines, letters, residence matters, municipal guidance and personal status.
- Use Inburgeren.nl for the general process and DUO for many personal exam and payment matters.
- Always check whether your information is general or applies to your route, residence status or municipality.
- Save messages from My Inburgering, DUO and the municipality in a permanent place so that you do not miss deadlines.
Integration routes explained
Read what the B1 route, education route and Z route mean, who they are intended for and how guidance, language level and end goals differ.
- Your route is not chosen based on feeling, but on the basis of intake, learnability, goal and feasibility.
- The B1 route focuses on language and participation, the education route on further study and the Z route on self-reliance.
- Under the new law, the municipality plays a central role in broad intake, PIP and guidance within your route.
Integration exams and obligations
View which exams, language components and mandatory components are often associated with integration and how they differ per route or trajectory.
- Not every route ends with exactly the same exams, so always look at your route and personal appointments.
- KNM, language exams, MAP and PVT are often confused, even though they are different components with their own goals.
- Before planning your exam, always check the current requirements in My Integration, DUO and information from the municipality.

Important questions that come up often
Use these short answers as your first orientation, then open the matching guide for more detail.
Is a residence route the same as an integration route?
No. A residence route is about how you come to the Netherlands and under which permit or exception you stay here. An integration route only then concerns learning, participation and obligations in the Netherlands.
Do you need an MVV or exam for every route?
No. That depends on your nationality, purpose of residence and personal situation. Always check the conditions on IND and Netherlands Worldwide.
Which authority is most important if you are still outside the Netherlands?
You often start with IND and the Netherlands Worldwide. Then you only look at integration information if it really applies to your route.
What do you usually arrange first after arriving in the Netherlands?
You often start with address, municipal registration, BRP and BSN. This is followed by DigiD, health insurance and checking your first official messages.
Can you arrange everything later once you live?
Some things can wait a while, but registration, insurance questions and access to official messages are often time-sensitive and therefore deserve priority.
Are these steps the same for each residence route?
The basics are often similar, but route, nationality, work or study can determine which deadlines and exceptions apply to you.
KNM is our active practice offer today, while the information pages already cover the wider integration landscape.
